8. FILL UP YOUR TOOLBOX WITH THE REQUIRED TOOLS

By saying filling up your toolbox i mean filling up your computer with the required softwares. By software i don’t mean paid and commercial softwares. As you are just starting up you need to use tools which are either free or the ones you have actually paid for. Once you start your carrier as a freelance web designer/developer you cannot use the tools downloaded from the torrent sites and all other websites. Its the time to either use free tools or pay for the commercial tools if you like them. Freeware tools do not mean that they are waste just because they are free. For example, GIMP is a free alternative of Photoshop. GIMP lacks some functionality that Photoshop includes but it is not a waste. GIMP is a really amazing software you must try.

9. MAKE RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER FREELANCERS

It is a really good idea to build up new relationships with other freelancers. This can help you get more projects in many ways.
For Example, A freelance web designer you know gets a new project on developing a wordpress theme and he is not good at it. But he knows that you are good at developing wordpress themes will give the project. And when you get a project that you are not capable of doing you can give it to the other freelancers you know.

Before taking a new project you should consider these things:

10. DO YOU HAVE SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THE PROJECT?

This is the most important thing to consider before taking a new project. Before taking a new project check out the skills needed to complete the project. Never take a project unless you are good at doing the task.
For example, if you find a new project titled ‘SEO Expert Needed’ then you should only apply for it if you have the skills needed and are good at it.
I have one more example for you. Let’s assume that you have found a new web design project that requires four skills namely, Bootstrap, JavaScript, HTML, And CSS. Then you should only apply if you are good at all the four. Never apply for a project that you are not capable of completing. Or you might get in a big problem.

11. DO YOU HAVE THE TIME REQUIRED?

Always ask yourself this question before taking a new project. This is the second most important thing to consider. If you have the required skills for a project but don’t have the time needed to complete it consider not to apply for it.
I simply mean you should check if you really have the time for completing the project. You should only take a new project if you have the required time.
For Example, If you find a new project requiring a PHP developer who can integrate Facebook oAuth login with a website. If you have the skills but don’t have the time. Never apply for new projects.

12. STATE ALL YOUR TERMS AND CONDITIONS TO THE CLIENTS

By saying this i simply mean that you should state all your terms and conditions of work to the client. It is a good idea to state things like charges for future changes and customization after project completion. I always state all my working terms to the clients like how i will charge them on fixed or hourly basis. Not stating all your terms will get you in problems in the future.

13. STATE ALL YOUR CHARGES

State all your charges in detail to the client. For example, If you are charging $500 for web app development. Don’t just tell your client that you are charging $500 for web application development. Be clear and tell your client how much you are charging for different components of the web application. If you are charging $100 for admin dashboard, $150 for a forum, $200 for jobs board and $50 for coffee :D. State it clearly.

After completing a project:

14. ASK YOUR CLIENTS FOR FEEDBACK

Always ask your clients for feedback after completing a project. Getting client feedback will not only help you improve yourself but will also make a good image of yours in the clients eye. You can also show the client feedback in your portfolio websites in a testimonials section.
When asking clients for feedback, I myself send them an email asking them to reply with their feedback.

15. STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOUR CLIENTS

Don’t be selfish after completing a project and receiving the payment. Be a good guy and Stay in touch with your clients. Staying in touch with your old clients can bring you more work opportunities. And it is a good habit to keep in touch with your clients. Staying in touch will help your clients remember you and if anyone asks them for a web designer/developer they know they will tell your name.
